You’ll find many Internet marketers talking favorably about DreamHost, but it’s surprising when you see just how many problems this host has. It certainly isn’t a terrible mess like some subpar hosts, and there are some good points, but there are much better hosts that cost about the same or less (especially after the first year). Not only that, but they slap customers in the face when they fail to deliver on their “100% uptime guarantee.” If you value your online business, website or blog, then it might be in your best interest to avoid DreamHost.
DreamHost is very generous when it comes to giving you time to make your decision. First of all, you get two-week free trial without spending a dime. If you don’t like the service, then you don’t have to risk any of your money. Most hosts only give you a few days or a week, but these 14 days should be a good initial test drive. Be sure to check the restrictions to ensure that you don’t overstep your bounds when using the free trial.
Another good point is that they have an insanely long money-back guarantee. Most hosts give you 30 days, others give you 60 and a small handful of hosts give you 90 days to get all of your money back. DreamHost gives you a full 97 days. This is one of the best money-back guarantees in the industry, which should give you more than enough time to make a decision about the host (under normal circumstances).
If you like paying for the exact amount of resources that you need, then DreamHost definitely delivers on this front. There are a number of packages to choose from if you are getting shared, VPS or dedicated hosting. You can also host unlimited domains on your account, which is always a plus.
Lastly, customer support is entirely (or at least primarily) based in the US. This ensures that they’ll be no language barriers if you’re facing a serious technical problem. However, customer service is conducted through email and live chat, and there are some problems with it (see below).
DreamHost has many benefits, but it unfortunately has just as many cons. The hosting is fairly expensive. Their smallest plan starts at nearly $9 a month, and it will go up after the first year. You’ll be spending over $100 a year for generic shared hosting. You can easily get the same level of service for half the price.
Do you like cPanel? Then don’t use DreamHost. They use a custom control panel that is fairly clunky. There are worse panels out there, but there’s no point in frustrating yourself with this software. New users that are already afraid of learning new software will want to avoid DreamHost’s system.

Live chat might be better, but even that’s a little slow.
The worst offense is definitely uptime. DreamHost offers a 100% uptime guarantee, but you have to understand how that works. DreamHost promises that it will pay any difference if downtime is discovered, but only if you are the one to report the issue. Not only that, but they don’t give you much compensation.
Most hosting companies that fall below their uptime guarantee will give you another month of free hosting. DreamHost will refund a day’s worth of hosting for every hour that your website is down based on a 365-day scale. That might sound fair, but let’s break down the price. Let’s say that you choose their cheapest hosting option for $8.95 a month and that your website is down for a whole hour. $8.95 x 12 = $107.40. If you divide that by 365, then you get about $0.29.
If your website is down for two hours, then you’ll only get about $0.60. I hope it’s worth it, because most people feel that this is a slap in the face. If you’re running a store, selling products and making money, then $0.60 hardly covers the damage of lost sales and, even worse, lost customers. While DreamHost promises 100% uptime, it’s really closer to 99.54%, which is below the industry standard.
DreamHost definitely has some good points. You can get a good price by using their coupons, there are plenty of accounts to choose from and the money-back guarantee is amazing. However, there are far too many problems for me to recommend this host. You can get better service at a lower price from other top hosts, like A Small Orange, Bluehost and StableHost. If you value your time and business, then you should stay away from DreamHost and choose a host that understands what customers really need from their hosting service.
